Famous nationwide for its stunning 12th century Abbey, Kirkstall is only two miles from the city centre and has always been an area popular with young families. Since the old Kirkstall Brewery site was converted into a large Hall of Residence, though, Kirkstall is fast becoming a new haunt for the city’s student population, who love its vibrant community feel and good transport links. The area is a consistent favourite with visitors to Leeds, too, who go to look round the Abbey and attend some of its many events, which in recent years have included a summer Shakespeare festival, open air music concerts and the Kirkstall Festival in July, which features local arts, crafts and music in the Abbey grounds.
